Kansas City Buddhist Center
As Buddhists in the Heartland of America we continually seek our collective awakening by practicing the teachings of Buddha-Dharma both on and off "the cushion". Kansas City Buddhist Center is a place for open exploration of Buddhist teaching and learning.
Rev. Ronn Pawo McLane has curated a collection of courses and practice classes that actively support that path of exploration.
We study and practice "Buddhayana".
Buddhayana is a term for an authentic, progressive, tolerant, and inclusive Buddhism. Buddhayana calls upon the wisdom from all the traditions in a syncretic way, but without sacrificing the authenticity of the Dharma. It provides us the means by which we may adapt these ancient concepts into our modern world in the most practical sense.
Buddhist Meditation Practice Class - Cultivating a Personal Meditation Practice. Meditation is the cultivation of an attentive and kindly mind. It goes without saying that Buddhist tradition is not the only place where we find this expressed. It can be found throughout humanity both implicitly and explicitly in myriad beautiful forms of practice that stretch back for many millennia. Nevertheless, the Buddhist tradition shows us how we can effectively engage with and transform our mind in a distinctive way, by looking at how we interpret ourselves and the world we experience. A serene, warm and engaging aspect of mind can be recognized and nurtured through meditation, but our interpretations and feelings can confuse, undermine and potentially reverse this process. Clarifying our understanding about the method - what makes our effort effective and what undermines it - can give us the confidence and inspiration to keep it up.
This course will include meditation with periods of reflection and discussion about what we are doing in meditation. We will look at meditation as one part of a holistic approach to being in the world in a more engaged, effective and happy way.
Foundations of Buddhism Class - Explore the foundational teachings of Buddhism and find practical ways to incorporate these timeless teachings into everyday life. This is an essential class for beginners as well as more advanced students to deepen your practice and gain the support and encouragement of others on the path. We will focus on the core teachings of Buddha Dharma: The Triple Gem, Four Noble Truths, Eight Fold Path and Six Perfections to name just a few.
Seeking Refuge - This class serves as a precursor to participation in a sangha refuge ceremony that occur on scheduled dates throughout the year. Taking refuge is a traditional and powerful practice that implies finding a reliable spiritual sanctuary, and utterly safe place to rest your heart and mind. We go for refuge from confusion, delusion and difficult emotions. Not as an escape but as a support in working with them. This 4-week class will explore the ongoing ways we can take refuge in any and every moment by remembering refuge and all it symbolizes -- as well as reaffirming the wish for awakening in all we do.
Chanting Practice - Chanting is a wonderful element to add to your personal Buddhist practice! Join us once a month as we share chants from a variety of languages and Buddhist traditions. Each session will include alternating periods of chanting and silent meditation. Whether you’re a chanting pro, or looking to improve your chanting knowledge, or just exploring. Everyone is welcome to join us as we come together to share this meaningful practice.
Half-day Silent Meditation Retreats - This half-day retreat is designed to provide a container of Noble Silence for personal contemplation, reflection, and practice. With minimal verbal instruction and guidance. Personal interviews available throughout the morning with Dharma Teachers.
Day-Long Retreats - Re-wiring our brains to be awake and aware. We can let the "snow-globe" of our experience to settle and allow a gap to form between stimulus and response. Join us for a day focused on the Buddhist practice of concentration, natural awareness and positive imagery. Give yourself a precious gift of time away from the hustle and bustle of life, to quietly reflect and discover a new way of being.
